2008 Season Thoughts: Ffej
I think many agree to let Havlat, Paulsson and Khabibulin go and use the money to sign Versteeg, Bolland, Kane, Toews, and Keith now. No reason to wait another second. It worked when Keenan dumped Savy knowing Roenick was coming on. It feels the same with Havlat. We've finally got some goal scorers that will only improve.
I give Tallon full credit for putting this team together. Yes even if some of it was by mistake. He assembled a conference finalist. Come on! When was the last time we went to the conference finals anyway? I say leave him alone until we see what happens next season.
I think we missed Wiz. And Barker and Walker are way too slow. Barker plays with no urgency. God Damn it I hate that. I called for his departure last year and remain of that position. Other than a big shot (we've got Campbell for this), I don't see the upside at all.
What's not to like in Burish and Eager especially on the fourth line? Good speed, nastiness and penalty killing. I'd like to see Beech or Aliu round out the other 1/3 next season.
Buf redeemed himself in the playoffs after showing that he had of the worst hands in the NHL throughout the regular season. I thought he and Brouwer got too much ice time especially when they weren't playing that well.
I didn't question Q much throughout the year. I thought he did well replacing a popular players' coach.
Ed Olcyzk gets an F. That fake laugh and at least twice-used jokes (Foote and Finger) is more than I can stomach. At least Tallon was funny in the day. How about Olcyzk's RA RA Red Wings (suck) sentiment throughout the conf finals? And I'm not talking about the legal Kronwall Havlat hit. Olcyzk was pro Red Wings (suck) throughout. Reminds me of Darren Pang on ESPN. But Olcyzk was even pro Red Wings (suck) when the Red Wings (suck)took penalties. Chicago native or not he deserves no free pass.
Foley was terrific as usual.
Hopefully we saw an end to a Red Wing (suck) era last night with their loss to Pittsburgh. I was stunned. They, as everybody knows, don't normally lose games like that. Maybe it's our turn.
